Last week I was at the SharePoint Conference with some of my colleagues from IDV and we demo’d to hundreds of SharePoint enthusiasts. Of course the map visualizations were a hit, but the new timeline functionality coming in Visual Fusion 4.5 (launching next month) was equally as enthralling. Our UX Lead John Nelson gave this a tremendous treatment in his blog, and I’ve snatched a cool image from that to show off the new capability. Seeing data in the dual context of space and time is so powerful. We’re going to be launching some videos and demos with the release in November to help accentuate this point, so be sure to check those out.
As far as the SharePoint Conference goes, seeing all the SP 2010 enhancements is really exciting. The product is changing a lot more than we all had originally thought and it’s definitely moving in the same direction that Visual Fusion is: give more power to the business user. Between relational lists, back-end data sources exposed as lists, and the nice mashup capabilities inherent in the new InfoPath Services Web Part, business users are going to have all sorts of incredibly helpful capabilities at their disposal for app creation. At IDV we plan to continue to leverage SP for plumbing and infrastructure and add value on top of that with cool visualization and analysis capabilities. Interactive maps, location intelligence, dashboards – all of these visual applications are taking huge leaps forward with IDV and Microsoft innovations.
2010 promises to be an exciting year for both Visual Fusion and SharePoint!
